Hold a lithophane up in a dim room and it looks like a plain, bumpy white panel. Put a light behind it and a photograph appears, with real depth and soft glowing detail. It's one of the most surprising things a 3D printer can make, and one of the most meaningful gifts.
How a lithophane works
A lithophane is a thin panel whose thickness changes across its surface. Where the panel is thick, less light gets through, so that spot looks dark. Where it's thin, more light shines through, so it looks bright. Turn a photo into thousands of tiny thickness changes and the light "paints" the picture back for you.
The idea is almost 200 years old. Lithophanes were first carved into porcelain in the 1820s. 3D printing simply makes them personal and affordable: we turn your photo into a 3D model and print it layer by layer.
Black and white or full color?
- Black and white is the classic look: warm, glowing and timeless. It's perfect for portraits, wedding photos, pets and memorials.
- Full color adds the photo's colors on top of the light-and-shadow effect. It's great for bright, colorful scenes like holidays, landscapes and kids' photos.
Panel, frame or backlit?
- Panel only: hold it to a window or lamp, or put your own light behind it.
- Framed: a stand-up frame so it displays nicely on a shelf or desk.
- Framed with LED backlight: the photo glows on its own, like a night light. This is the most popular choice for gifts.
How to choose a photo that looks great
- Pick a clear subject. One to three faces or a single pet works better than a big group shot.
- Good, even lighting. Avoid photos with harsh shadows across faces or very dark areas, which print as solid thick plastic.
- Contrast helps. A subject that stands out from the background reads much better when lit.
- Use the original. Upload the full-size photo from your phone, not a screenshot or a photo sent through a messaging app, which loses detail.
- Think about the crop. Our panels are 4 × 6 in, portrait or landscape. Leave a little room around heads so nothing important gets cut off.
