NFC Keychains: How They Work and 10 Smart Ways to Use One

An NFC keychain looks like any other custom keychain, but it has a tiny chip inside. Tap it to the back of a phone and a link opens: your website, your Instagram, a review page, a menu, anything with a web address. No app and no QR code to scan.

How NFC works

NFC stands for near-field communication. It's the same technology behind tap-to-pay cards. The chip in the keychain has no battery. When a phone comes within a couple of centimeters, the phone powers the chip wirelessly and reads the link stored on it, then shows a notification to open it.

We program your link onto the chip and build it into the keychain while it prints, so it works straight out of the package.

Which phones work?

  • iPhone: iPhone XS and newer read NFC tags automatically, as long as the screen is on.
  • Android: most Android phones have NFC. It sometimes needs to be switched on, usually under Settings > Connected devices.

Tip: the NFC antenna is near the top of most iPhones and the middle of the back on most Android phones.
